- Harsh engagement when changing gear range from P to D -
Topic number | GI27.50-P-044018 |
Version | 3 |
Design group | 27.50 Gear assembly |
Date | 03-11-2010 |
Validity | Transmission 722.9 up to sequence number 1.842.410 |
Reason for change | Additional possible remedy |
Complaint
When changing gear range from P to D, harsh engagement may be noticeable.
Cause
Friction coefficient fluctuations possible in the B2 disk packs in vehicles with transmission sequence numbers smaller than 1.842.410.
Remedy
Applies only for transmissions with sequence number less than 1.842.410: Replacement of B2 disks. Order parts as per EPC.
Otherwise the engagement sequences for N-D and N-R must be taught in again as follows:
Note: Always remain in the gear ranges N/R/D for at least 5 sec!
Start the engine from cold,
shift 5 times N-R,
shift 5 times N-D --> warm up transmission to 40°C and while doing so, exceed a speed of 50 km/h at least once.
shift 5 times N-R,
shift 5 times N-D --> warm up transmission to 70°C and while doing so, exceed a speed of 50 km/h at least once.
shift 5 times N-R,
shift 5 times N-D.

- Hard 1-2 shift or hard torque converter lockup clutch engagement -
Topic number | GI27.00-P-044014 |
Version | 2 |
Design group | 27.00 General |
Date | 03-11-2010 |
Validity | Transmission 722.9 |
Reason for change | Remedy revised |
Complaint
The customer complaint "Hard shift, presumable the 1-2 shift, occurs when moving off" is often received even though the problem is hard engagement of the torque converter lockup clutch (KÜB) in the start-off procedure.
In order to permit a clear diagnosis, restrict the 1st gear before moving off.
If a jolt occurs at the point where the state of the torque converter lockup clutch changes from "open" to "slipping", then the cause should be sought in the control of the torque converter lockup clutch.
Cause
Control of torque converter lockup clutch engagement not ideal.
Remedy
- Via DAS menu item "Initial startup", perform transmission software update and then perform SCN coding.
- Via DAS menu item "KÜB adaptation", adapt the torque converter lockup clutch according to the coolant temperature and torque window.
- Then perform a test drive.
If the complaint is still present, first work through the diagnosis tree for transmission 722.9 (GI27.00-P-035661) and, if the complaint persists, please contact Technical Product Support and attach a current quick test report and the control unit log to the TIPS case.

- 2-3 upshift slips once -
Topic number | GI27.00-P-046507 |
Version | 6 |
Design group | 27.00 General |
Date | 08-25-2010 |
Validity | Transmission 722.9 with engines 273, 272 and 642 |
Reason for change | Remedy revised; software for OM642 and M272 will only be available for electrohydraulic controller unit 23 06 and 24 06. |
Complaint
After a cold start, slippage may occur in the 2-3 shift when the vehicle moves off for the first time.
Cause
A full basic charge for the K1 piston cannot be guaranteed with a cold start. This means that the plate contact pressure must still be built up, which can lead to a single brief slip of the gearshift.
Remedy
Topic is known. A software improvement is being produced. Replacing hardware does not remedy the problem.
Software for vehicles with M273 in combination with electrohydraulic controller unit A220 270 23 06 and A220 270 24 06 published with DVD 01/2010
Do not perform any repairs for vehicles with OM642 and M272 until further optimization software is available. Software is being produced for vehicles with electrohydraulic controller unit A220 270 23 06 and A220 270 24 06.

Grinding noises from area of front axle - wheel bearing defective -
Topic number | GI33.20-P-046670 |
Version | 6 |
Design group | 33.20 Wheel location, wheel hub |
Date | 12-02-2011 |
Validity | Model 204 except 4MATIC; except 204.9## (GLK), 207 |
Reason for change | Linked operation items added! |
Complaint
Grinding noises from area of front axle - wheel bearing defective
Cause
Corrosion spreading under wheel hub sealing ring. Dirt and water are washed in front of the sealing ring of the wheel hub via the rpm sensor bore in the steering knuckle or through corresponding gaps between the anchor plate and steering knuckle. Corrosion forms on the contact surface of the sealing ring and spreads under the sealing lips. As a result, moisture can penetrate the wheel bearing and cause corrosion.
Remedy
Please note the revised procedure for repair in the case of wheel bearing damage on the front axle!
The most important new feature of the repair method is the use of a repair hub (Figure A) with inserted stainless steel race (1).
The stainless steel race (1) is pressed onto the corroded steering knuckle (Figure D) during assembly of the wheel hub and guarantees the new seal with the wheel hub sealing ring. This means that it is no longer necessary to replace the steering knuckle!
Axle alignment is not necessary with this repair method!
In order to avoid follow-up repairs, always replace both wheel bearings on the front axle in problem vehicles!
First-time installation of a repair wheel hub:
1.) Detach wheel hub, bearing and brake cover plate.
2.) Use a wire brush to remove loose corrosion from the contact surface of the wheel hub sealing ring (Figure C).
3.) Clean steering knuckle spindle thoroughly.
4.) Install new brake cover plate (Figure E) with optimized sponge rubber (picture 2).
5.) Push on repair hub (Figure A) without tilting it and pull as far as the stop with the clamp nut (Figures G,H,I)
6.) Adjust wheel bearing play (Figure J).
7.) Install sponge rubber ring (Figure F) on rpm sensor.
8.) Reassemble the vehicle.
Important note for subsequent reinstallation of a repair wheel hub:
When the repair hub with stainless steel race is installed, the stainless steel race is positively pressed onto the steering knuckle (Figure D).
If the wheel hub is subsequently removed/reinstalled, there is a risk of damaging the sealing lip of the wheel hub sealing ring when pushing on.
For this case there is a repair kit (Figure B), consisting of a wheel hub sealing ring with preinstalled stainless steel race.
This repair kit must be pulled into the wheel hub which is to be reinstalled.
To do this, use the regular tool W203 589 0243 00, but with a different method.
As the stainless steel race reduces the inside diameter of the hub sealing ring, the tool die (Figures M, N, picture 4) must be turned through 180° so that the hub sealing ring contacts the rear face of the tool die (the side not lined with rubber).
1.) Insert wheel hub sealing ring with stainless steel race into wheel hub by hand. This centers the hub and makes it easier to pull in with the tool.
2.) Pull in wheel hub sealing ring with stainless steel race using rear face of tool die of special tool W203 589 0243 00.
3.) Remove old stainless steel race from steering knuckle (as shown in Figures K, L).
4.) Push on wheel hub without tilting it and pull as far as the stop with the clamp nut.
6.) Adjust wheel bearing play.
7.) Reassemble the vehicle.
Note:This new repair method will soon (expected as of Week 19/2010) also be available in SDmedia
